Lobbying the government for refereeing transparency
Yet another thunderfuck decision with VAR giving Liverpool that penalty, which even Pool supporters were ringing 606 to say what a terrible call it was, got me thinking.

Can the Government force the FA to be transparent with refereeing decisions? That is, refs to be made available to the media to explain why they made certain decisions. Conversations between Stockleigh Park and the Ref to be made available. The minutes of meetings between refs and their bosses to be made available.

With so much money in the game, it's very open to corruption, bias, etc.

That in mind, I thought of starting one of those petitions where if you get over 100,000 signatures, it has to be discussed in Parliament.

Thoughts?

Re: Lobbying the government for refereeing transparency
Governments hardly lead by example when it comes to transparency.

They've got computers that can play chess, beating grand masters, yet they can't get a computer to interpret the rules of Association Football.

Standard of refereeing has always been piss poor in the Prem.

Peter Scudamore once said a club like Leicester will never win Premier League again, maybe that says it all!

Re: Lobbying the government for refereeing transparency
VAR has been excellent for offsides as there is little to no human intervention. For penalties pretty poor as the human factor like Friend are shit and/or biased.

Liverpool's penalty decision was terrible yesterday.

Re: Lobbying the government for refereeing transparency
The VAR ref SHOULD be made to justify / walk through why he is making a decision in real time, either textually on the screen or verbally via audio link. His word is final and hearing it would i think put the endless debate over most of those dodgy looking decisions to bed. Could have done with that Sunday.

Lobbying Government for it is a waste of time, however and good luck getting the FA to listen to that

"VAR has created far more problems than it’s solved "

But it makes for damn good television.

Damn good in this case is limited to increased viewings and therefore more advertising revenue.

He who pays the piper...

Re: Lobbying the government for refereeing transparency
In football, var and replays should only be used for blatant errors or things that have been missed completely (off the ball incidents etc)

What seems to be happening now is the officials on the field are using VAR as a safety net and not making a decision and then waiting to see if VAR spot something.

The referee and assistants should officiate the game as normal.

If there is a clear and obvious error, VAR should alert the ref. If there is a ‘debatable’ error then it should just stay as the initial onfield decision (like umpires call in cricket) and/or a time limit to decide (say 30 seconds)

I don’t want to see lines drawn for offside when the camera is never level with either player and the moment the ball is played is decided by when var pause the playback. Nobody ever complained before that a player was offside by a toenail.

I don’t want 5 minutes of going over a corner to try to see if there’s any reason to disallow a goal - especially when things like the foul on Dawson against Burnley are still missed

I don’t want the replays slowed down 1000 times to look for the tiniest contact as a reason to give a penalty

VAR has created far more problems than it’s solved

Re: Lobbying the government for refereeing transparency
I thought originally having an ex pro at Stockley Park along with the Referee was probably a good idea but then you watch the pundits and half the time two of them disagree on whether an incident was a penalty or not so you would get the same inconsistency.

With all the technology apparently placed in these little vests the players wear now it's a shame there isn't the tech to place small chips in those and the players boots to determine offside and then just do away with VAR for everything else. At least the discussion used to just be about how shit Referees were rather than how corrupt it has all become.

Problem is players are a cause of a lot of these dodgy decisions. If there were less cheats on the field of play there would be less dodgy Refereeing decision.

Boris has said that he's unaware of any issues with VAR but will organise a bring-your-own drinks party at No. 10 just before the next VAR decision that doesn't go our way.

E-mails already on their way.

Lobbying the government?

How about going back to the pub after the game and bemoaning how blind that fucking ref must be?

In fact the worst the decision the later you stayed in the pub

I started an online petition a few years back to ask for a change in the law that only certified regards can start or sign an online petition.

Seems it was approved

Have any of these online petitions actually worked, ever?

Re: Lobbying the government for refereeing transparency
Specifically on yesterdays pen the worrying thing is that the ref made the right decision then the VAR twonk with the advantage of close up replays made a nonsense decision. And even more worrying the ref changed his mind looking at the same thing.
Both obviously dont understand what a penalty is

There has to be a Premier league review (not a government one from people called Ollie) & the first improvement is separating reffing and being VAR. VAR officials should be ex refs & retired players , maybe one of each. Too much looking after your ref mates and general incompetence at the moment.

Not sure the govt should be involved but transparency is the key step to sorting the problem out.

Re: Lobbying the government for refereeing transparency
Nothing personal Alfs but this all comes across as ridiculous. Suggesting governments get involved in on field decisiobs in any sport comes across as more than a little cry babyish. If there are problems with match officials in sport,it is up to the respective governing body's to sort out.

Remember, politics has no pkace in sport.

Re: Lobbying the government for refereeing transparency
I've often wondered about the late penalty equaliser Leicester got against us near the end of that season. Going into injury time West Ham were 1-2 up when one of their defenders threw himself to the ground in the corner of the penalty area.
With hindsight the Referee probably did everybody a favour as it would've let Spurs in with a chance of winning the title and we'd never have heard the end of it but at the time I was livid.

Mike

Leicester are being ignored??? What does that even mean, ignored by who, think when they won the title its was widely applauded and recognised!

If anything them winning that season just shows that there isn’t any major corruption or anything dodgy going on to favour the big teams as I don’t remember them suffering any constant poor decisions, red cards, penalty’s or goals getting dodgy offside calls either for or against them from the refs? And they had more than a few tight wins, some against the big clubs, remember them beating I think Spurs 1-0 away and got bettered in the process but held on and defended like there lives depended on it, no penalty’s in that game and a few close calls for them!!!! They won the league through consistency and the big clubs shooting themselves in the foot time and again.

Re: Lobbying the government for refereeing transparency
If any of the media companies/footballing authorities/PL clubs make political donations to the Tory party, you can forget any meaningful investigation; they will -

1. Act in the best interest of (what brings most money into) their party,
2. Act in the best interest of (what brings most money into) the country,

Having the Splitter 6 in Europe as often as possible ticks both of the above boxes. Just look at how Leicester are being virtually ignored yet them winning the PL was probably the most significant footballing event since it's formation.

I think the government should debate and concern itself with major issues such as the virus and how we respond, Russia getting stroppy about Ukraine etc not did Mike Dean gave a shit decision for a Liverpool penalty and who could have gained from this!

Any investigation needs to be done by the football authorities and/or the relevant government department for sport appointing and independent enquiry etc if need be or foul play or dodgy dealing is suspected.

I honestly don’t think Refs are being used as tools by faceless men or whatever farcical persons should be behind why Jota got a soft penalty when Liverpool had the game in the bag anyway or to favour certain teams or give some of the shit decisions they do, its lunacy to think so in my humble opinion, what next investigate football crowds on the basis they may intimidate refs?

Go on any football forum and fans of even the big clubs accuse each other of unfavourable treatment and VAR calls going against them but have the blinkers on when the ball is on the other foot……..
